Welcome to Texas Tech Rowing

History of Texas Tech Rowing Club

Texas Tech Rowing was founded with a simple but ambitious vision: to bring the sport of rowing to West Texas and build a competitive collegiate program from the ground up.

When it became clear that Texas Tech University did not yet have a rowing program, a group of passionate students set out to change that. What began as an idea quickly became a mission — to establish a team that would represent the Red Raiders on the water with pride, discipline, and determination.

One of the first challenges was finding a suitable training location in the Lubbock area. After exploring several options, Buffalo Springs Lake emerged as the ideal home for the program. With its open water and welcoming community, the lake became the foundation for Texas Tech Rowing’s future.

With a location secured, the focus turned to building a team. Through campus outreach and social media, interest quickly grew among students eager to be part of something new. The program’s inaugural athletes balanced the demands of academics, training, and student life while helping lay the groundwork for a sustainable and competitive organization.

Securing equipment was the next major milestone. Through partnerships within the rowing community and the support of organizations dedicated to growing the sport, Texas Tech Rowing acquired its first racing shell — marking a major step toward becoming a fully operational program.

After a year of building, training, and preparing, Texas Tech Rowing made its competitive debut on October 6, 2024. Just one month later, the team earned its first medal in November 2024, signaling a promising future for the young program.

Today, Texas Tech Rowing continues to grow, driven by a commitment to excellence, teamwork, and representing the university with pride. What began as an idea has become a thriving program — and the journey is only just beginning.
